Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on Self Assessment and on how MyTaxFiling works. If your question is not here, the guides in Articles and the Tax Tables go deeper.

Filing Self Assessment

Who needs to file a Self Assessment return?

You usually need to file if you are self-employed as a sole trader, receive rental income as a landlord, have untaxed income above small thresholds, or HMRC has asked you to file. High earners affected by the High Income Child Benefit Charge and people with capital gains above the annual exempt amount also typically need to file.

When are the deadlines?

For a standard Self Assessment return: 31 October for paper filing, 31 January for online filing and payment, and 5 October to register if you need to file for the first time. If you are in scope for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, quarterly update deadlines apply instead.

I have several income sources. Does that change anything?

It changes your bookkeeping, not your deadline. Employment, self-employment, property and dividend income all go on the same return, each in its own section. Keeping each source's records separate through the year is what makes the return straightforward.

What happens if I miss the 31 January deadline?

Late filing penalties start at £100 and grow from there, with interest on late payments as well. If you cannot pay in full, file on time anyway and agree a payment plan with HMRC. Filing on time and paying late is much better than doing neither.

Using MyTaxFiling

How does MyTaxFiling work?

You record your income and expenses through the year, on mobile or web, and see an estimate of your tax position as you go. When it is time to file, everything is organised for you to review and approve before submission to HMRC.

Can a professional check my return?

Yes. Alongside the guided digital journey, professional review and managed services are available, where a professional reviews your return or prepares it for your approval before anything is filed.

Is my data secure?

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and nothing is filed without your review and approval. Our support team is UK-based.

Do I still deal with HMRC directly?

Your return is submitted to HMRC in the end, and your records stay yours. We prepare everything you need and guide you through the submission step, so you stay in control of what is filed.
